World Eaters. Bloody excellent, no pun intended. They are an underloved legion, and a personal favourite.
And Grey Knights? Killer. Something awesome this way comes.
Your cat is way better behaved than my cat.
A good interview, and some interesting ideas. I look forward to seeing these ideas on the page.
And the ‘raising of the cat’ made me laugh a lot.
Grey Knights? Never been a fan, their fluff is garbage, they’re a boring deus ex machina of a Chapter, I hope you improve on them. In fact, you probably will, if your take on the Custodes is any indication of what you can accomplish given the wretched specimens of the genre to have to deal with.
World Eaters? I would hang and drip-dry the entire Grey Knights line of fluff from hooks until the meat sloughed off their bones for BL to give the World Eaters to you. Would be dreamy to see them finally get the attention they deserve apart from screaming like nutcases and dying in droves to Imperial Guard for comedy value.
It’s a toss-up between what I liked most for the interview: The “Dan Abnett! Take a photo of me! Dan!” part, or the absurdly calm reaction of your cat being held up like that.
Wait, no, it’s the strangling Jim Swallow part.
Jim would just shiv me in the kidneys, prison-style. He never fights fair. It’s what I dig about him.
Which begs the question, is there a way to shiv someone that ISN’T prison-style?
“RIGHT. I’ll ‘ave you for that. Put up your shivs, Queensbury Rules.”

Grey Knights! :D, automatic seal of win and approval :D. Please make a Chaplain character, they are awesomely cool when they are just in regular chapters but a Grey Knights Chaplain?, they could drop the heroes like Calgar and Dante. Plus the image of them, Chaplains in bright silver armour with glowing white skulls and in the Aegis armour… too epic for words.
World Eaters, not my favourite traitor legion but I do like them. And if anyone can make them more than frothing madmen its you, after all you made the Word Bearers sympathetic.

Good to hear you’re working on the Grey Knights. I loved the Ben Counter series.
I can’t imagine the challenge it will be to write for the World Eaters. Kharn was a pretty cool character in the Horus Heresy. Especially in “After Desh’ea”. Angron seems to stand out as being one of the few primarchs active long after the siege of Terra. I find it fascinating the common thread between all chapters and legions, is the resounding loss felt for their primarchs. I wish someday BL would get around to bringing some of them back around. At least Fulgrim and Perterabo. I wonder what they would say to Abaddon…

Awesome. That is going to be a real challenge, I can’t wait to see how you handle that. And Grey Knights? Fantastic. Ben Counter’s series was epic, probably the best thing he’s done.

Will your GK novels be closely connected to Ben Counter’s?
I have to ask, why are there not more BL books dedicated to newer SM chapters? It seems like the vast majority of the works released deal with First Founding chapters, or very popular second+ founding chapters (Crimson Fists for example).
Dan’s masterful work on the Iron Snakes stands out, and I would like to see more books that develop new Astartes Chapters, especially those that are not beholden to the Codex.
The rulebook, as far back as RT, states there are about 1000 Space Marine chapters in existence Why do we only get to read stories about a dozen or so of them?
Interesting that you originally pitched Crimson Fists Aaron. “One Hate” was the first work of yours that I read, and it made me want to search for more. Think you’ll ever be interested in doing them again (or another loyalist chapter?)
I’m so pleased to hear that you’re tackling the World Eaters. “After Desh’ea” was surprisingly sad … the World Eaters weren’t always psychopaths, and they might have been able to break free of their genetic legacy if the Emperor hadn’t left them alone with their violent father. Instead they were abandoned with the man who murdered all of their heroes, and told that they should aspire to be him.
…and you know that there had to been attempts on Angron’s life from inside the legion. There had to have been Astartes who watched him plow headlong into certain death and thought “…let him go, just let him go…” The world eaters have the potential for a lot of pathos, but also a lot of tragedy: they were turned into their father, the poor bastards.

World Eaters eh?
While I like everything you’ve written to the point that people who generally trust my views on books now look askance when I mention your stuff(although the fools haven’t read it!) This news makes me feel a little like Aedh with his dreams under your feet.

Let me just say Aaron that the first heretic was a huge suprise. I really was so disapointed in the Battle for the Abyss that I was worried that the Word Bearers would forever be cast in the James Bond super villian light throughout the heresy novels, but you really did the legion justice.
I think that there is a lot for most readers, male readers in particular, to relate to in the book when dealing with Lorgar and the relationship he had with his two fathers and his mentor – not to mention the struggle of the main character as he questioned his own loyalties and whether or not they were real while also giving the Primarch his due.
Thank you for a great read. You have just cemented yourself in the ranks of Dan and Graham in my mind. Keep up the great work and I am VERY interested in how you can make the World Eaters a legion the reader can sympathise with.
