Questions and Answers

Annnnd back from the Horus Heresy meeting. Which means: back at work on Betrayer, Werewolf: the Apocalypse 20th Edition, and The Lord Inquisitor.

With all the filming I’ve been doing of Alexander lately, I think I should probably make good on my claim to finally “Do a video Q&A, like Dan always does.”

If it fails due to time or club-fisted editing (and remember, this’ll just be me in my office, so don’t expect miracles), I’ll just answer stuff in a long post like I’ve done in the past. But if it works, it should be worthwhile.

So, ask questions.

Go wild.

We’ll see if this works.

  1. Here we go:

    1. Are we going to hear any more of Decimus in the near future?
    2. We all know you are secretly planning your Rise Of The Warmaster series – can you give us any hints on what it’ll be like?
    3. Did the Death Guard get talked about? Love them.
    4. So… how are you?

  2. You have obviously given a great deal more depth to our understanding of the Night Lords legion, though the eyes of our protagonist Talos. How much freedom are you given by GW in advancing the background of the 40k universe and how much do you run by HQ in terms of fluff before publishing?

  3. When will you do the next Dark Angel story?!!! Since “Savage Weapons” was a piece of art, and probably the best piece of Dark Angel fiction to date, it would be utterly fantastic to have another piece. Perhaps even as part of the “Space Marine Battles”-series? Anything to fix the horror of “The Purging of Kadillus” / “Call of the Lion” / “Angels of Darkness” / “Sons of Fenris”…

    Best regards,

  4. I have a question, actually, Aaron. I’m a big fan – I’ve been into Games Workshop stuff (!) since I was 9 years old, way back in 1991, and I honestly think your writing in the Night Lords triology is some of the best fluff the company has ever put their name on. And therein lies my question (sort of) – how much freedom do you have with the fluff? Is there a strict history/political set up you need to adhere to set by GW or are you given relative artistic license with it? Does Jervis Johnson ever ring you up at 4.32am garbling something about Abaddon? I love the way you’ve punctured the whole Emprah-centric stuff with the Night Lords triology, by the way. So much more interesting than all those “for the Emperor” biffs.

  7. You mentioned “Nightfall” might be the long awaited Night Lords HH-story. What can you tell about it? Location? Characters? Setting?

What are the most annoying questions you get a lot and dont want to get anymore?

And so I got Void Stalker the other day and will begin to read it during my Greece-vacation nex week. My question is about the Authors note where you wrote about the time difference, in Soul Hunter it had only been 100 years since HH, but you wanted to change it, or something? What exactly in details did you change between the books?

  8. I’ll throw you a couple.
Obviously you’re constrained somewhat when writing the HH series by established continuity. If you could change 1 thing that’s already established what would it be and why ?

Is there any chance of you writing any Warhammer fantasy stories ?

Any chance of you using the Necrons in some way in a book soon ?

  9. I am really enjoying the 3rd Night Lords novel, how did you decide to write it like you did. I mean the way that they are short of everything but hatred. It was very very refreshing to see this, a nice change from the other traitor books I have read where they had everything. Did you get directions for the book from GW?

  10. How hard is it to write any scenes containing the Emperor? Considering he is so far above humanity, and his mind works on a level incomprehensible to us, how do you make him seem human enough to relate to, but aloof enough make the reader feel like he’s the Emperor of Mankind, and not just some douche with superiority complex?

  15. A few questions, my prince.
In the Emperor’s Gift, there was mention of the wolves facing angron after his change to daemon prince … will there ever be a scene where Angron vs Russ in an epic battle of Daemon Prince vs Primarch (whether as a memory or the great scouring novel series)?
Also, given Betrayer’s setting from Butcher’s prince, will we ever see the Gulliman vs Lorgar or Angron in daemon form or primarch form (either one would be good)?
Would you write the siege of Terra in the future, cos i wanna know the epic duels of Malcharion the war-sage and his comparison to the other swordmasters of the legions…especially against the black knight of the fist???
(ps. please consider writing a series on the Badab War… i have both imperial armour books of that, but they lack your artistic literature grace

  20. What’s your research process like when first tackling writing about a different legion? Are you still 40K obsessed enough to be reading everything that is put out by other BL authors andyou just go from memory mainly? Is there some vast repository of any and all fluff from codices and White Dwarf that you have access to so that you can “bone up” on a legion or do you just use the wikis that are already out there online and hope for the best?

In your heresy meetings, how is it decided who picks up which stories, ie do people put forward story ideas which are then planned in or are stories set up and writers pick up what interests them? So chicken or the egg basically 🙂

    1. How does it feel to be killing your own creations, 10th company and 1st Claw for example.
    2. I often found your human (non-augmented Imperials) are much more likable and, surprisingly, more interesting than the Astartes themselves, such as the Archregent from Voidstalker and of course Septimus and Octavia. Do you get that alot?
    3. Will you be branching out? Like writing independent stories where you get much more free roam for ideas?
    4. Do you get frustrated with any of BL’s or GW’s current policies? Price hikes, rulebook writing, appealing to younger audiences, and not using any forms of sexual imagery? (but chainsword disembowelment and ritual flaying is fine though)
    5. I have to say, your new blonde hair dye reminds me alot of neo-Nazi skinheads….
    6. If the NL omnibus ever comes out, would we be seeing any new stuff like closure?

    Ok, shooting from the hip here;

    1) Any plans to do more Imperial Guard stuff in the future? And if so would you like to write more about Cadians, another established regiment or a unit of your own creation?

    2) Which of your characters have you most enjoyed writing? Und vhy?

    3) I’ve heard that if two Black Library authors want to write something about the same legion during the Heresy that you’re made fight by Prison Rules – naked – and the winner gets to write about them? Is this true? And if not then why not?

    4) Helsreach and Necropolis are the only two 40K books that have ever given me the chills (the good kind) and want to be actually be there to see the herosim. They both nailed what I imagine hive cities essentially being murdered would be like. Would you ever write another book about a ‘last stand’ type scenario like Helsreach?

  48. So many questions already. We all know you have championed the Word Bearers, (sort of Night Lords), and now World Eaters. I don’t want to put you in the spot as I know “hypothetically” you want to write a Heresy novel for the Night Lords after the Betrayer. But are there other legions that we may not know about that you have a vision to write about…. hypothetically of course.

    2. Will the audio dramas appear in written form (e.g. as an anthology) and if they do appear, is there a rule when we can expect that to happen (like the limited novellas)?
    3. Will you write more about the Dark Angels Legion in the future?
    4. Any interesting news about The Lord inquisitor?

    1. What warhammer fantasy race, if given an opportunity, would you write about?
    2. Did Gav ask for insight from you when he wrote the Lion?
    3. Would you like to pick up the DarkAngels story where Gav left at the end of the Lion?

  72. Love your work, keep it up!

1: Considering the changes Grimaldus went through in Helsreach, will we ever see how that effected him after in a new book?

2: For the love of everything holy, why cant you write a blood angels book? You want to, I want to, the world want you to! ADB for president if that happens!

3: In all the lore regarding grey knights, grand masters have been portrayed as living avatars of war, fighting foes no other space marine or mortal could. I loved the emperors gift, but when Lorgar (a chapter master i grant you) took a big dump over Joros without him even reacting, I almost put the book down. I know space wolves are fanboy material over at BL, but that was a bit much. I mean (insert youtube clip of peter griffin in family guy saying “come on!) 🙂

Thanks for all the good books and your communication with your fans!
Ps: i will name my unborn child Aaron if you write a blood angels book!

  80. Is it true that your next Heresy novel is calledArgel Tal’s Day Off? The rumors I’ve heard is that Argel Tal and Talos meet up on the Hand of Vengeance and realize they need a day off from the besieging the Emperors palace to find themselves so they get the day off by telling Horus they’re off to find Alpha Legion sleeper agents and spend the day having fun. They go to art galleries destroyed by Emperors Children and even accidentally find themselves in the middle of a Martian thanks giving day parade where they dance on top of a Warhound Titan. So guess i was wondering if you could conform or deny any of that?

  84. Okay so been away for a month on honeymoon and have to catch up on a hell of a lot so just a couple of questions that spring to mind.
    1. If the “powers that be” allowed you to create a new 40k species, what would they be and what would their strengths and weaknesses be?
    2. How many novels do you usually have on the go at any one time and do you find it easy to switch your mind set between them?
    3. As a lot of the people who follow you and other authors are wanna be writers (Inc me), and it seems that getting published by BL is a very very selective process (for good reason), can you suggest other routes into getting written work out into the public domain within the 40k universe that will help to develop writers and therefore maybe improve chances of getting published by BL further down the line with more experience behind them? (also roughly how many “new” authors do BL take on each year?)
    4. Has being a father influenced your writing style at all?
    5. Any book signings in the Leeds area on the horizon?
    6. Should Kate Beckinsale take advice from the Grange Hill crew and “just say no” next time some suggests it would a good idea to do another Underworld movie?
    7. Marmite, love it or hate it?
Okay that was seven not two but hey ho! Keep up the good work Mr ADB.

  94. The Night Lords series was fantastic, but I remember there being talk of it as a six-book series. Now that that ship has sailed, do you feel the books were complete even in a shorter form? Would you have liked to play out certain plots more, like Ruven or Cyrion’s curse? If so, how would those have run their course?

Also, ditto on the sequel to Cadian Blood, or just another one-off. That book was intense, what with how much it didn’t give a fuck.

  95. I just finished The Emperor’s Gift, I don’t even know what to say, ADB did it again. Electric Goosebumps during much of the reading and I still get it just thinking back on some of the events. I’m probably going to read this book at least 10 more times this year. The best book I’ve read and also one of the best experiences. Okay here comes the question even though I have no way how to put this. How do you approach writing 40K, what kind of relationship do you have with the lore. How important is it to you, do you get a huge kick getting to write these books or is it just a “job” (how much of a fan are you). I want to get in to that brain of yours, what makes you tick because your writing sweeps me away in a way that should not be possible. I don’t think there are many out there who enjoy your writing as much as I do.

Now that was a lot of questions and I probably messed them all up anyway.:D

and will we see anything more of Reclusiarch Grimaldus, God-Emperor he was Bad-Ass!

  101. Hey up,

I’m a big HH fan and am really enjoying the Word Bearers story you have going. Is Betrayer part of the same story and is it a continuation or conclusion of it?

When the High Lords of Terra meet is there an all encompassing document that has the HH timeline/key character background that everyone has to work from, or are the only limits what has already been published?

Has the HH series grown beyond expectation and will we get to see background/endings for all the Legions/Primarchs before the finish?

Did you find it different writing an audio drama to writing a book? And in your suggestions for how it should be read did you suggest that Angron should sound like Hitler from Downfall (only not German) or is that just my ears?

Are you going to the BL Weekender?

Do you collect and/or game with any armies, if so, which ones and do they relate to your books at all?

I’m looking forward to Helsreach, which I have waiting on the shelf, do you plan to do any more SM Battles novels?

    Sorry for all the Qs!

    All the best,

  102. 1) Do you think it’s possible to write a full-length novel from the point of view of the Orks (1st or 3rd)?

    2) Do you think it’s possible (sidebar: and has it potentially happened?) for chaos-worshipping traitor marines to come back to the Emperor, if not the Imperium? (your reformed recidivist in TEG got me thinking).

    3) What are your thoughts on the Badab War, and the Chapters therein? Who are your favourites, on both sides? (I’m an Executioners man myself, and am trying desperately to get BL to let me write about them!)

    4) You’ve done a bit of writing in both 3rd and 1st person perspective; which is your favourite, and why? What do you see as the pros and cons?

    5) Any plans to visit Australia?

Will you, or any other official fluff writer, at any point, include a chapter named Purifiers?

Comment by Chapter Master Ignis Domus | May 22, 2012 | Reply

  112. Not sure if this question has been asked before, I didn’t read all the comments (yes I know I’m a slacker).

Your acknowledgments in Void Stalker thanked Nick Kyme as your ever patient editor. This made me wonder, does Nick Kyme have a double role at BL both as editor and writer? Or is it regular practice at BL for writers to act as editors for each other?

Whether upfront or through mentioned association with Legion’s nerve-implants and the Butcher’s Nail and/or involvement with the transformations of his legion brothers that they would ultimately recognize as the feared World Eaters.

    2. How did the conception of First Captain Jago Sevatarion come about? Just his swordsmanship reputation across the legions and let alone begin first to utter that infamous Chaos battle cry made eternal in ‘The First Heretic’ makes him a delightful scoundrel to cheer for.

    3. Was Lucoryphus too wicked to kill off?

    4. Are there facets of the 40K universe that you have touch upon and would like to explore them further outside the primary POV of astartes? (e.g. Navigators, (Dark) Mechanicum, Imperial Navy, Inquisition, Daemons, Xenos etc.)
