Aaron Dembski-Bowden

Don't worry. None of this blood is mine.

Alexander at 2 Weeks

Alexander is two weeks old. While our sleeping patterns seem irrevocably fucked (and I’m often so tired I forget my own name) things are starting to settle down.

I’ve started working again, which means the blog will go back to more work-based stuff and the usual ranting.

For now, to answer the plaintive cries of friends and family, here are some of eight million photos from Alexander’s first 2 weeks outside his tummy pod. Doctors and midwives alike are sick to Christ of my questions, now. “How long will his eyes stay blue?” “When do baby spots go away?” “Are you sure he’s not ginger?”

About a minute old, and hunting for boobies.

Two hours old, and yawning.

Two hours old; so begins the first nap.

One day old, and my first photo with him.

First week. Yet more sleeping. It's the only time he's still enough for me to take a photo.

First week. Blessedly asleep.

One week old. A rare occasion: sitting in his bouncy chair without wailing.

One and a bit weeks old, and half-asleep in my arms at 5am, while I try to finish the synopsis for Betrayer. Rogue Trader photocopies stuck to the wall behind.

Sleeping on Uncle Barney. Awwww.

Meeting Louise and Kev (Katie's cousin and her boyfriend).

Two weeks old. Managed to get him still enough for a single shot, which sounds unhealthily like something a sniper would say.

Just over two weeks old. This gives the impression he sleeps a lot, which is sadly not the fucking case.

  3. Your chromosomes have combined beautifully. Gene-deficient wastrels like myself are partly cloudy yet slightly envious.

  4. I don’t generally like babies, they’re creepy yet yours seems okay somehow. I don’t want to hold him or hug him or any of that. But I can happily sit here and nod and smile about little Alexander.

    • And then there will soon be nights waiting up for them to return from this party or that…

  6. Cute pics! The yawning one is still my favorite because the potential for hilarious captions, he looks like he’s giving a battlecry of tremendous power. I’m also reminded of an old Simpsons episode where Marge shows a bunch of baby pictures of Bart sleeping “here he is napping”, “oh and here he is dozing”, “and here’s little Bart after a visit from the Sandman!”. Adorable!

  7. Word of fatherly advice brother… get rid of that soother as fast as you can. It may seem like a good idea now to keep the little guy quiet but trust me when I say to you that he’ll become an addict and when you do decide its time for him to stop using the soother in 12 to 18 months… it’ll be worse than dealing with him at 18 when he’s trying to kick heroin!

    • He actually spits it out more often than not in preferance for his hands. But yes, the Dummy Fairy will be round ASAP to replace a big boys dummy with a toy so she can take the dummy and give it to another little baby who needs it.

      • It’ll mess his teeth up, too. Main reason why I needed braces as a kid…

He doesn’t half look like Aaron, though, doesn’t he? All he needs is a little beard… Hopefully, he’ll grow into your looks, Katie.

  12. Need. Baby. Snuggles. NAO! He’s so friggin’ cute! Usually newborns are like funny-looking little old men, but yours is 110% adorable.

Also, I still vote that “FOR THE HORDE!” is not inappropriate.

  15. Great looking kid ADB, shame he didn’t get Katie’s hair. I’m reading The Emperor’s Gift now and I saw your dedication to Annah Dembski-Bowden, I assume had Alexander been born with a different anatomy that’d be his name.

You can probably look forward, or not, to the day he reads this book and asks, “Why does it say Annah instead of Alexander?” Hehe.

    • I know, right? At least it makes an awesome story. Not many people get novels dedicated to them at all, let alone the wrong gender. Good conversation piece.

Dare I ask how TEG is going? Mail me in secret if you prefer, like.

      • Hehe indeed it is.

And its going nicely thus far. I’m not too far in at pg 83, currently Squad Castian and Annika are hunting the tainted [deleted by the Holy Ordos] inside the [deleted by the Holy Ordos], and they have received the “message” that was left behind, hehe very ominous, particularly looking forward to when they find out exactly what is waiting for them there. I quite like the first person style you’ve used for the novel, it adds to Hyperion’s character who is already interesting, his interest in mortals is a page-turner and him being a Grey Knight makes the fascination rather unique. I’ll be fully reviewing it once i’m done.
