Don't worry. None of this blood is mine.

Some Names for a Future Novel

My desktop is covered in these little note bastards.

Here’s one at random, from the patch of my second monitor reserved for post-Betrayer notes.

Yes, that’s the cover for Betrayer you can(‘t) see in the background. Yes, some of these names are Babylonian and Carthaginian. No, I’m not showing you the Betrayer cover yet, so don’t ask.

Really, the nature of this distant novel shouldn’t be too hard to guess.

  1. First one is pretty obvious, obviously, but others I have a hard time placing other than perhaps something to do with Word Bearers or Ultramarines. Last 2 sound Night Lords-isch.

  4. The fourth one (Telemachon) reminds of me Telemachus – Odysseus’ son from the Odyssey. šŸ™‚

  5. Isn’t Telemachon an UM from Know No Fear? Interesting

    • Nope. Different names, different guy.

    • That be Telemechrus šŸ™‚ One of the few down points of KnF. After all the buildup… nothing šŸ™‚ I have a sneaky feeling he’ll be showing up at a later date though šŸ™‚

  6. I’ve noticed that whenever I read the name ‘Abaddon’, I read it as having the same cadence and monotonous tone as the Akira chant.

    A-Ki-Ra
    A-Ba-Don

    I think it’s pretty fitting.

  7. This has probably already come to your attention Mr. Dembski-Bowden, but if it hasn’t, just a reminder that there was a run down of the Despoiler’s retinue in one of the Chaos Space Marine codexes I believe (4th edition maybe?(don’t think this included Zaraphiston or Ygethmor)).

  8. why doesnt anyone ever do one about ahriman would so mad he has so much background to go on and could teram with other space marine character how bad as would talos and ahriamn destroying the false emprerors stupid followers

    • Probably because none of the Black Library authors know what “teraming” means, foolish uneducated fellows that they are. It wouldn’t surprise me if they were so busy bastardising perfectly good Greek names that none of them even knew who Ahriman Wouldsomad is. Layabouts, the lot of them.

    • I’m afraid that my university educated mind cannot understand what “teram” means as well.

    • Actually I believe John French is doing something about Ahriman and his lot, from what he said at BL live 2012

  9. What is the naming convention for the Night Lords anyway? Greek? Or is it dependent on the different social origins of the recruits?

  10. Arkytas and Telemachon are a bit bastardized (as most names in 40k) ancient Greek names.

    Comment by Mortemer | March 1, 2012 | Reply

    • Definitely thinking World Eaters.

There is a Saint Telemachus who became a martyr in Rome.

  11. According to ADB at BL live telemachon is an emperors children who runs off to join the black legion – that and abaddon would suggest that this is for that rise of the warmaster ting.

    Mental bant!

  12. I hope it will be the Abaddon novel, about him becoming the new warmaster of chaos. I really think this could make a very cool book. Your description of Abaddon in soul hunter was nice, o I really hope this will be it.

  13. Dude,
it was awesome to see you at BLL!, I was the chap who asked you what you thought of Chuck Wendigs Kickstarter. Sadly, the sound did cut out halfway through your reply, so if I looked little confused, that was why.

  14. Didn’t the Black Library website have a cover for Betrayer? Or is it just that that character is cropping up in a few things lately?

Also: Betrayer is about The Betrayer, isn’t it? Or is that too obvious?

    Comment by G | March 6, 2012 | Reply

    • debatable. when asked about betrayer at BL live he said its gonna be about what Lorgar and Angron were really up to around Ultramar (while Guilliman presumably thought Lorgar was going to be at Calth). Angron and the world eaters are according to him going to be in the limelight, and he also said that the subtitle for it (the bit under the massive title) would be ‘blood for the blood god’, given all that it looks like it could be ‘the’ betrayer after all šŸ™‚

  15. Dude, just finished Butcher’s Nails – fucking awesome. Review going up on The Founding Fields tomorrow.

  16. Arkytas – was this pulled from a dictionary of ancient names or do you intend the character to resemeble the real Archytas of Tarentum? Thanks!

  17. Looking forward to it either way. I was the guy who asked who would win in a fight between talos and xarl šŸ™‚ bit surprised at ur reaction tho lol

    Comment by VDOG | March 7, 2012 | Reply

    • Dude! I thought you said “Sahaal” not “Xarl”.

Still Xarl, though. Easily. Talos would go down like a punk. I think part of his appeal is that he’s not a show-off pounding ultimate badass like many 40K characters.

      Comment by Aaron Dembski-Bowden | March 8, 2012 | Reply

      • that is definitely true mate, in a way thats what makes him such a don – out of interest i wonder who would win in a fight between Xarl or Sahaal – I mean Xarl hypothetically has that lovely thunder hammer from just before he (SPOILER). if sahaal would stop flying and stand still for more than a second he would just get squished… lol šŸ™‚
